Final exam guide for A0: Setup, formatting, columns, and colors

Modified on Fri, 20 Mar at 1:35 PM

If you're having trouble with your A0 - Intro level certification exercises, make sure you can answer "Yes" to these questions before reaching out to a teacher:

  • Did you match the case exactly? In A0, writing "commissions" instead of "COMMISSIONS" or "microsoft excel" instead of "Microsoft Excel" will trigger an error.

  • Did you exit the cell before validating? Make sure to press Enter or Tab after typing. If the cursor is still blinking inside the cell, the system won't "see" your change.

  • Did you use the right selection key? Remember: hold Ctrl to select separate (non-adjacent) columns or cells, and use Shift for continuous ranges.

  • Did you click inside the table? Contextual tabs like "Table Design" or "Format" only appear when you have an active cell within the working range.

If you’ve answered all these questions and you’re still having issues, check the following guide with common errors in the A0 final exam and how to solve them:

Problem #1: I can't rename the sheet.

Solution: To make the change valid, double-click the Sheet Tab at the bottom. Type the exact name requested (e.g., "Commissions") without adding extra spaces at the beginning or end, and press Enter to confirm.

Problem #2: I can't delete the duplicate columns correctly.

Solution: Errors often happen when trying to delete them manually one by one. The correct way is to select the first column header (e.g., column B), hold down the Ctrl key, select the second column header (e.g., column F), right-click on either of the highlighted letters, and select Delete.

Problem #3: Column width and row height don't match the requirements.

Solution: Make sure you select the entire columns by clicking the letters at the top before dragging the boundary line. If you find it difficult to hit the exact pixel width by dragging, right-click the selected columns/rows, go to "Column Width" or "Row Height," and manually type in the numerical value.

Problem #4: Text formatting (font, color, size) is failing validation.

Solution: Check that you are applying the exact style requested. If the exercise asks for "Aharoni" font, size 15, and "Dark Blue," do not use similar variations. For colors, always choose from the "Standard Colors" group to ensure it matches the answer key perfectly.

Problem #5: The header isn't perfectly centered.

Solution: Excel has two types of centering. You must apply both: "Middle Align" (vertical) and "Center" (horizontal). You can find both icons in the Alignment group on the Home tab.

Problem #6: Report borders are missing or incomplete.

Simply applying "Outside Borders" isn't enough. Select the full range (e.g., B6:N22), open the Format Cells dialog box, go to the Border tab, and select both "Outline" and "Inside" before clicking OK.

Problem #7: Zoom levels or small text return an error.

Solution: For zoom, use the slider in the bottom-right status bar and ensure you hit the exact percentage (e.g., 80%). For text like "Microsoft Excel," double-check your spelling and ensure no cells are left "active" (with a blinking cursor) before submitting.
